There was a time when Travis Hunter didn't really know Lil Wayne's music. Now, "6 Foot 7 Foot" is one of the two-way Colorado playmaker's go-to listens.
The connection between the two stars is deeper than tunes, though. It was reported late last month that Hunter had signed with the rapper's Young Money APAA Sports agency. There's a reason why Hunter trusts the partnership to build his brand. He talked about the relationship on his podcast, "The Travis Hunter Show," on Wednesday.
"I've been building my bond with a couple people there for a little minute," Hunter said. "Having Lil Wayne in my corner throughout college football and my journey, being who I am today, it was only right. He's always been there. Nobody knows that because I keep that side of my connections and personal life away from everybody."
Hunter said that Lil Wayne and those the rapper trusts humble him when necessary and boost him up the same. The support was something that was most important to him during the process of choosing his representation.
"I know I'm in good hands (with) somebody that's gonna take care of me and make sure I'm good, make sure of everything that I hope for and make it happen for me," Hunter said.
Explaining the bond between Travis Hunter and Lil Wayne
Travis Hunter received the Heisman Trophy last month in the closest vote for the award since 2009. He also became the first player in the sport's history to bring home both the Bednarik Award and Biletnikoff Award, given to the nation's most outstanding defensive player and receiver, respectively.
After mentioning Deion Sanders and his son, Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders, in his Heisman acceptance speech, Hunter shouted out Lil Wayne, who also attended the ceremony and was sitting to their left.
"Wayne, you don't know how you came into our life, man," Hunter said. "My fiancée loves you. I didn't know none of your songs until she let me know, because I don't listen to music. She let me know. She told me, 'You've gotta listen to this. If you don't listen to music, listen to Wayne.'
"From that day on, that's all I listen to. Pregame music, those are the songs I listen to. When I get in that TRX and I blast that music, I listen to Wayne. ... I respect you for coming out here and coming to support me, man."
Travis Hunter's time with the Buffaloes has likely come to an end, closing the book on one of college football's brightest stars. Hunter's affiliation with Lil Wayne will extend to the next level. It's possible that Hunter is the first player taken in April's NFL draft.
