Former Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Mike Golic Sr. shared his thoughts on Deion "Coach Prime" Sanders' emotional pregame interview before Colorado's game against BYU. Saturday's Alamo Bowl ended with the No. 23 Buffaloes falling 36-14 to the No. 17 Cougars.
On Monday’s episode of "GoJo and Golic," Mike Golic Jr. and his father reflected on Sanders’ struggles to hold back tears as he walked the field one last time with his sons, Shilo and Shedeur, before the game.
Mike Jr. praised the heartfelt moment, saying:
"It's hard to ignore the cool father and son moment we got. Seeing Deion Sanders overcome with emotion was a human moment for a guy that seems larger than life in so many other ways."
In response, Mike Sr. drew parallels to his own experiences as a parent:
"It's a normal moment for a parent,” he said. “Your mother and I did it with you, Jake, and even Sydney in her Senior Day Swimming. We cried."
In the emotional pregame interview, Sanders reflected on his journey as a father.
“The journey, it’s been a tremendous journey,” Coach Prime said. “I’m seeing when they first put on uniforms, when they first started. The good, the bad, the indifference. The ups and the downs. I’m thankful and appreciative.”
Golic’s family legacy in sports adds a deeper layer of relatability to his comments. His sons, Mike Jr. and Jake, both played college football—Jake at Cincinnati during the 2014–15 season and Mike Jr. at Notre Dame from 2008 to 2012—while his daughter, Sydney, swam competitively for Notre Dame.
Mike Jr. also signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers as an undrafted free agent after the 2013 NFL draft.
For Coach Prime and his sons at Colorado, the Alamo Bowl loss marked a bittersweet ending
For Deion Sanders and his sons at Colorado, the Alamo Bowl loss marked a bittersweet ending. From taking over a struggling 1-11 Buffaloes program left in the shadows to silencing skeptics to developing a Heisman Trophy winner and transforming the team into must-see TV that became a ratings powerhouse and a Top 25 contender, Sanders made an undeniable impact.
With his signature sunglasses on, headset draped around his neck and head bowed, Sanders stood on the field with his sons—just as he had countless times before. But this moment felt different.
On Saturday night, about 30 minutes after Colorado's 36-14 defeat to underdog BYU, Coach Prime appeared in the postgame press conference with his quarterback son. Safety Cam'Ron Silmon-Craig sat to his right, Shedeur to his left. It was a somber scene after a game where nearly everything went wrong for the Buffaloes.
