After missing a field goal on the game's opening drive, Miami forced two punts and capitalized with a five-play, 69-yard drive capped off by a two-yard rushing touchdown from Dylan Downing, taking a 7-0 lead into the second quarter. The RedHawks opened the second quarter with a 22-yard field goal, extending their lead to 10-0.
Miami forced a fourth Nothern Illinois punt and scored their second touchdown with a 30-yard trick-play touchdown pass from Javon Tracy to Reggie Virgil, giving the RedHawks a 17-0 lead. Northern Illinois mustered a 47-yard field goal to cut the lead to 17-3 entering halftime.
