Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian is viewed by many in the college football world as one of the best head coaches in the business. As a result, it was not surprising to hear when Adam Schefter reported that some NFL teams could be interested in luring him away from Texas and to the NFL.
While this is a move that would make sense for many NFL teams, it is not one that would make Texas fans happy. The responses were mixed, but many pointed out that he probably will not want to leave until he gets to coach the team with Arch Manning as the starter.
"Sark not leaving before coaching Arch so yall might as well keep it moving," one fan wrote.
"College guy. Needs to stay. Arch Manning next year," one fan commented.
"To find out if Manning is declaring in 26?," one fan added.
Not all fans agreed that Steve Sarkisian makes sense as an NFL head coach. Several even pointed out that he has struggled at the college level despite having NFL quality talent on his team.
"He has NFL talent and can barely beat ASU, why would they call him after that????," one fan wrote.
"Sarkisian agent having Shefter put this out there is so obvious……..Texas increasing his salary downloading," one fan commented.
"He was just outcoached by a 34 year old, second year head coach.....," one fan added.
If Steve Sarkisian is hired, it won't be his first tenure in the NFL as a coach
If Steve Sarkisian is lured away from the Texas Longhorns in the offseason to an NFL team, it would be the third time he has coached at the NFL level.
His first tenure was brief. He was the quarterbacks coach in 2004 for the Oakland Raiders. He opted to return to college and USC after one season. However, his presence did help the Raiders compile more than 4,000 passing yards that season.
He was also the offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons between 2017-18.
Steve Sarkisian has had a successful tenure as a head coach at the University of Texas. Since joining the team in 2021, he has steadily improved the team. After a losing record in 2021, the team's record improved to 8-5 in 2022.
He then led the Longhorns to a 12-2 record and Big 12 Conference Championship in 2023. This season, his Longhorns have only lost twice (both to Georgia) and are in the semifinals of the College Football Playoff where they will face Ohio State on Friday.
