"Not trying at all": Jason Whitlock rips Oklahoma State as Coach Prime & Co. take a commanding lead

The Oklahoma State Cowboys came into this season with high hopes. They were last season's runners up in the Big 12, and now, in a conference without the Texas Longhorns, they had the opportunity to become the new leaders.

However, this has not been the case. They have massively struggled this season and came into their final game of the season against the Colorado Buffaloes with a 3-8 record overall, but a 0-8 record against their fellow Big 12 rivals.

They were unlikely to threaten the Buffaloes for the victory, but the Cowboys were massively outplayed by Colorado. This led to sports journalist Jason Whitlock saying this about the Cowboys' performance in the game:

"Oklahoma State is not trying at all. Not that it matters."

Oklahoma State were playing with a significantly weaker team than what they went into the season with. Most of their top stars have been injured, benched, or have had their input severely limited by their opponents.

Additionally, the Cowboys are playing freshman quarterback Maealiuaki Smith instead of Alan Bowman. He has struggled in the few appearances that he has had this season, and this continued against the Buffaloes. He started the game by throwing an interception on a pass into triple coverage, and the poor performance continued from there.

However, as Whitlock says, their performance in this game does not matter. The Cowboys have had a season that they would want to forget and have been playing meaningless games for the last few weeks.

How poor has Oklahoma State's season been?

Bearing all of this in mind, it is no suprise that the Colorado Buffaloes dominated the Cowboys to record a 52-0 win.

This caps off the worst season of coach Mike Gundy's 20-season tenure as coach, and is the first time that the Cowboys were not able get a single win against their Big 12 opponents since 1994, when Pat Jones was the coach of the program.

Coming into the season, this team had a lot of potential and could have challenged for a spot in the College Football Playoffs. However, 14 weeks later, they will not even be in contention for a bowl game, breaking a streak of 18 seasons.

For 2025, the Cowboys are going to need to improve. Star player Ollie Gordon is likely to declare for the NFL Draft, and quarterback Alan Bowman may not return for an eight season. They are going to need to bring in new talent and maybe a new coach if Oklahoma State are going to return to relevance.
