After months of close contact with the Colorado football program, quarterback Julian Lewis has officially committed to the Buffaloes. The five-star prospect announced his decision during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Thursday, flipping his commitment from USC.

The news prompted former Colorado tight ends coach Tim Brewster to praise Deion Sanders. Brewster, now serving as interim head coach at Charlotte, commended Coach Prime’s relentless recruiting efforts.

“Nothing ever happens by accident for @deionsanders.” Brewster wrote on X. “The absolutely grinds the process and reaps the rewards. God Bless Coach.”

Julian Lewis excited to commit to Colorado

Julian Lewis’ commitment to Colorado had been anticipated by analysts for months. The quarterback made four visits to Boulder after originally committing to USC, signaling a potential flip. On Thursday, he expressed excitement about his decision.

“I'm excited for the opportunity to get to work and compete," Lewis told ESPN. "Colorado wasn't recruiting me until I reclassed, so it really was perfect timing. This is only the beginning. I trust Coach Prime and (offensive coordinator Pat) Shurmur to help me become the player that I want to be.”

Lewis is expected to sign with Colorado when the early signing period begins on Dec. 4, allowing him to enroll early in January. He is widely regarded as the successor to Shedeur Sanders, who is expected to declare for the NFL Draft after two seasons as Colorado’s starting quarterback.

Will Julian Lewis start for Colorado as a freshman?

Julian Lewis’ commitment has sparked questions about whether he will earn the starting role next season. With Shedeur Sanders heading to the NFL, there is a strong chance Lewis could take over, which likely influenced his decision to flip his commitment.

“Colorado has a lot of energy,” Lewis told 247Sports in March. “Coach Prime is super positive and motivating. Talking to coach (Pat) Shurmur and Shedeur (Sanders), they want me to make the best decision for me, but made it clear that I have the opportunity to play early."

True freshman starting quarterbacks are rare in the Power Five. Nebraska’s Dylan Raiola was the only freshman to begin this season as a starter. However, Lewis could join the small group of freshmen in contention for a starting role as early as 2025.
