The Texas Longhorns have one of the best quarterback rooms in college football with Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning. Throughout the season it was widely accepted that Ewers is the starting quarterback. However, as the Longhorns' first-round matchup against the No. 16-ranked Clemson Tigers approaches, some fans and media members have expressed interest in seeing Arch Manning start.
Quinn Ewers was the unanimous starter at the beginning of the year, but an injury allowed Arch Manning to step in for a few weeks. In that time, Manning performed very well. Since Ewers returned, Manning has only played situationally. Nonetheless, the debate over his should start has raged on.
On Friday, Greg McElroy appeared on ESPN to discuss the two quarterbacks. Although he believes Manning should play situationally in the red zone, thinks the Longhorns will need to "throw their way to victory." As a result, he thinks Ewers is the better option for the Longhorns right now. However, he did acknowledge that he thinks Manning will be a great player in the future:
"There's a moment in the 'Mean Girls' movie where they say, 'stop trying to make fetch happen.' That's kind of what I'm going to say about this Arch thing. Let's stop trying to make Arch into his uncles right now."
McElory's comments caused a big reaction on Twitter as several voiced their support for Manning.
"Arch Manning > Quinn Ewers … and it has nothing to do with his last name. Ewers is a flawed quarterback," one fan wrote.
"I disagree - as a Georgia fan I think Arch gives them an added wrinkle and spark that scares me," one fan commented.
"Arch certainly has the talent to deserve more playing time. I'm surprised he hasn't gotten more when the Longhorns have held a good lead, but he's not going to take the starting spot away from Ewers," one fan added.
Other fans showed support for Ewers, agreeing with McElroy.
"This is Quinn’s team. Everybody seems to get that but the media. There’s a reason most of us think you’re trash…," one fan wrote.
"This is Quinn’s Team," one fan commented.
"Ewers has been whats got you Longhorns to the playoffs. I think next year your entire fan base is gonna find out the grass isn’t always greener on the other side," one fan added.
Arch Manning & Quinn Ewers' Texas play Clemson in the first round
The Texas Longhorns will need to decide their quarterback situation soon because they play Clemson in the first round on Saturday. The game kicks off at 4 p.m. ET.
Regardless of who starts, the Longhorns will be big favorites to win the game. The Longhorns only have two losses this year, both at the hands of Georgia, but will need to be careful to avoid complacency here.
