Notre Dame, MSU announce home-and-home series for Megaphone Trophy in 2026, 2027

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Michigan State Spartans on Thursday announced a home-and-home series in 2026 and 2027. The series will also be for the Megaphone Trophy.

Notre Dame will host Michigan State on Sept. 19, 2026, at Notre Dame Stadium, and then will go on the road to play the Spartans on Sept. 18, 2027, at Spartan Stadium. Times and broadcast details will be announced at a later date, the schools said in a press release.

"The Michigan State-Notre Dame rivalry is not only one of the oldest rivalries in all of college football, it's a series that is meaningful to Spartan players and fans alike," Michigan State Vice President and Director of Athletics Alan Haller said. "It's fitting that the battle for the Megaphone Trophy renews in the 60th anniversary season of the 1966 Game of the Century."

Notre Dame and Michigan State have had a rivalry for years, but they haven't played since 2017 and will now renew their gridiron battles in 2026.

The Megaphone Trophy was introduced into the rivalry in 1949, which was created by the Alumni Clubs of Notre Dame and Michigan State and is given to the winner of the game.

Notre Dame vs. Michigan State rivalry history

Notre Dame and Michigan State used to have a prominent rivalry as they first met in 1897, with the Fighting Irish winning 34-6. However, the schools haven't played since 2017, when Notre Dame won 38-18.

The rivalry didn't have a trophy from 1848 to 1948, but in 1949, the Megaphone Trophy was introduced. Since the trophy was launched, Notre Dame has a trophy series record of 33-27-1.

In total, the schools have played against each other 79 times, and Notre Dame leads the all-time series 47-29-1.

The longest win streak in the rivalry is eight games by the Fighting Irish from 1897-1907 and 1987-1994, while the largest margin of victory is when Notre Dame beat Michigan State 53-0.

In the last 10 games played between Notre Dame and Michigan State, the Fighting Irish are 6-4, but two of those wins in 2012 and 2013 have since been vacated.
