Ohio State coach Ryan Day is one of the coaches in charge of the elite teams who are on the hot seat for the upcoming season. Most of that heat stems from his record against his team's biggest rivals, the Michigan Wolverines, a game that the divisive coach has lost three times in a row.
Ohio senator and former President Donald Trump's pick to be his vice president, JD Vance, who also attended the school, weighed in on whether Day's job was on the line during an interview with Semafor.
"Holy sh*t, she asked me if they should ditch Ryan Day if they lose for the fourth year in a row [to Michigan]," Vance said.
"Look, I have to give a diplomatic answer here: Look, Ohio State fans, I’m certainly among them — we have been spoiled by the last 15 years of the OSU/Michigan rivalry, and I think that I really want us to win, and I’ll be really pissed off as a fourth year in a row, but that’s all I’ll say."
Ryan Day defended by analyst despite record against Michigan
Ohio State coach Ryan Day has been in charge of the Buckeyes for five seasons and has a less than stellar 1-3 record against their fiercest rivals, the Michigan Wolverines, perhaps the only game that matters to fans of his team.
During an episode of "Always College Football," analyst Greg McElroy weighed in on Day's perception among fans for losing multiple games to heated rivals, Michigan.
“He’s (Day) already being labeled that (overrated) by some,” McElroy said. “I think it’s a little backward. We all know that every game is weighted differently. No one is gonna try to sit here and tell you that the Michigan game is the same level of importance to Ohio State fans as a game against Maryland.
"No one is gonna try and compare the two. No one is gonna sit there and say, ‘Yeah, you lost to Michigan but, hey, you beat Iowa. So, you’re good with us.’ [The] Michigan game means more.”
“So, he has to beat Michigan really more than anything else, but I don’t how you could call a coach overrated when he has eight losses and we can name them off the top of our heads," McElroy added.
Ryan Day and his team are favorites to win the Big Ten championship by FanDuel (+155), but that would need defeating top teams such as coach Dan Lanning's Oregon Ducks and, of course, opponents Sherrone Moore's Michigan Wolverines.
