The Ohio State Buckeyes beat the Texas Longhorns 28-14 in the Cotton Bowl Classic to proceed to the national championship game after a rampant campaign in the 12-team college football playoffs. The Buckeyes never trailed in the game against the Longhorns and were tied 14-14 in the fourth quarter before pulling away for the win.

The No. 8 Buckeyes will face coach Marcus Freeman's Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the national championship game on Jan. 20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta.

Freeman and Ryan Day will get the chance to win their first national championship title.

College football fans on X/Twitter had varying predictions about the national championship game between Ohio State and Notre Dame.

Some fans predicted a Buckeyes blowout:

"Ohio state might drop 50 unfortunately," one fan posted.
"Ohio State by 10 tbh," another fan wrote.
"Ohio State by 10-13," one fan said.

Ohio State rally to favorite status after poor end to season

According to DraftKings, the Ohio State Buckeyes are 9.5-point favorites for the national championship game clash against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. A month ago after losing to rivals, the Michigan Wolverines, coach Ryan Day's job security was called into question and the Buckeyes were written off in many quarters.

During his post-Cotton Bowl game news conference, Day addressed the doubts that assailed the team after that loss.

"This team is resilient," Day said on the podium via CBSNews.com. "About a month ago, a lot of people counted us out. These guys went to work. This team, these leaders, these captains, this staff – everybody in the Woody believed. Because of that, I believe we won the game in the fourth quarter.
"There's probably a lot of people in Columbus that are having a good time tonight. We only want to do it for 24 hours because we only have one left," he added.

Buckeyes wide receiver Emeka Egbuka also revealed why the Buckeyes' class of 2021 came back and their redirected goal after losing to the Wolverines for the fourth consecutive season:

"We hadn't really won anything, and that's the reason we came back," Egbuka said. "Then you lose that last game again [against Michigan], and it hurts. It will always hurt, but just like we did before this season, we locked arms and said we still have a chance to win the big prize, the national championship. Let's go do it."

The last time the Buckeyes won the national championship was in 2014 under coach Urban Meyer, while the last time the Fighting Irish won the title was in 1988 under coach Lou Holtz.
