Despite carrying the Buckeyes to the playoffs, Ohio State coach Ryan Day has the hottest seat in NCAA football. Following the dismal 13-10 loss to the Michigan Wolverines, Day received public support from Ohio State athletic director Ross Bjork.
During an appearance on "97.1 The Fan" on Thursday, Bjork was unequivocal in his support for Day assuring fans that the embattled coach would be back next season regardless of how the Buckeyes perform in the college football playoff (5:40).
"Absolutely," Bjork said. "Coach Day and I have just hit it off so well. I've been really, really impressed. Every single time I talk to him, I learn something. He's innovative. He recruits at the highest level. He has a great staff.
"So to me, we’ve got to maybe change some conversations a little bit. I think we need to maybe just approach things a little bit differently. Coach Day is awesome. He’s great to work with. He totally gets it. He loves being a Buckeye, and so we’re going to support him at the highest level.”
Joel Klatt analyzes Ryan Day's support from Ross Bjork
During last Wednesday's segment of "The Herd," Fox Sports analyst Joel Klatt analyzed the first message of support for Ryan Day from Ohio State athletic director Ross Bjork when the pressure for him to get sacked was at its highest (3:12).
"I don't think so just because I'm only going by what their athletic director has said (Ross Bjork)," Klatt said. "Ross is relatively new to the job, this will be his first full year on the job as athletic director at Ohio State and I don't think he wants to go down that road.
"It would cost a significant amount of money, you're looking at upwards of $45 to $55 million to buy out the current coaching staff."
"You would need to then go and hire somebody and spend money in the NIL, you're looking at another $20-25 million to do that," Klatt added. "You're in the neighborhood of $75-85 million to make that decision and I don't think that he has the appetite for it and I don't think that would be the right move."
Ryan Day has his work cut out for him as the No. 8 seeded Buckeyes face the No. 9 ranked Tennessee Volunteers in the opening round of the college football playoffs.
