The Ohio State Buckeyes enter the season with a lot of hopes but also several questions; the most prominent one being who will be the starting quarterback of the squad.
When the team's offensive coordinator, Chip Kelly, was asked whether QB1 will be named in a few weeks, he seemingly avoided the question.
“That’s a great question by you and I know exactly where you’re going with that,” Kelly said to the media. “I don’t have an answer for you.”
Kelly has a lot of trust in Buckeyes coach Ryan Day, and his opinion will largely decide the battle. Regardless of who wins the starting job, the team will have plenty of depth and options at quarterback throughout the 2024 season.
Ohio State has several talented QBs on its roster
Will Howard (an experienced transfer from Kansas State), Devin Brown (a former five-star recruit who has seen playing time with Ohio State), Lincoln Kienholz (who is returning to the program), Air Noland and Julian Sayin (two promising freshmen who entered the team this year) are all candidates for the starting QB role.
Brown, who was previously in the running for the starting job, had a disappointing performance in recent practices. Meanwhile, Sayin is one player who is generating significant buzz and could take over the starting role if given the opportunity.
The highly-touted 2024 recruit, has drawn comparisons to Tua Tagovailoa, who famously led Alabama to a comeback victory in the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship Game.
"If this guy gets on the field he might not relinquish the job," said Director of Scouting Andrew Ivins on Monday's episode of the 247Sports College Football Show. "Kind of reminds me of when Tua Tagovailoa was backing up Jalen Hurts in 2018 at Alabama."
Sayin, who was ranked as the No. 3 QB in his recruiting class, completed 74.5% of his 212 pass attempts as a senior in high school and threw just one interception while accounting for 28 total touchdowns.
