A few weeks ago, the No. 9 Ole Miss Rebels looked like a near-lock to make the playoffs. After a 28–10 win over the No. 8 Georgia, the Rebels headed into their open week in a great position with favorable matchups against Florida and Mississippi State coming up. However, the open week did not help as they lost 24–17 to Florida on Saturday.
As a result, the Rebels are no longer favored to make the playoffs. While there is still a small possibility that they could qualify, the odds are low. However, they could be selected for several non-playoff bowl games.
Ole Miss bowl projections 2024
To get an idea of which bowl games Ole Miss (8-3) can play in, it is important to first look at its playoff chances. With the loss to Florida, it is no longer possible for the Rebels to make the SEC Championship Game. They can't catch Texas (10-1) and do not have enough tiebreakers to make the game even if all the teams ahead of them lose in Week 14.
However, there is still a small possibility that the Rebels could qualify for the playoffs via one of the at-large positions. The first five spots go to the five highest-ranked conference champions. Meanwhile, the final seven spots go to the seven highest-ranked teams as determined by the CFP selection committee.
According to ESPN's College Football Power Index, the Rebels have a 6.2% chance of making the playoffs. They will need a win over Mississippi State in Week 14 to have a chance.
What bowl game will Ole Miss play in?
If the Rebels miss the playoffs, they could play in several bowl games. CBS Sports projects Ole Miss will play in the ReliaQuest Bowl against Iowa on New Year's Eve. 247 Sports has a different prediction, projecting the Rebels to play in the Las Vegas Bowl against Washington.
Several bowl games have Southeastern Conference tie-ins. The Rebels could be selected for other bowl games such as the Gasparilla Bowl, Birmingham Bowl, Liberty Bowl, Music City Bowl, Citrus Bowl, Texas Bowl, Gator Bowl and Duke's Mayo Bowl.
