Despite his retirement from coaching earlier this year, Nick Saban is once again thrilling college football fans this season but in a different job. The former Alabama coach took on a broadcasting role at ESPN in February and became a member of the College GameDay crew.
Saban is fast becoming an important member of the college football premier pregame show crew, and fans are anticipating seeing him on Saturdays. Host Rece Davis shared the former coach's "GameDay Zen" routine Tuesday on Instagram in a viral Home Depot commercial.
The commercial video, which showed Saban dressed for the College GameDay live broadcast while observing the Zen meditation, has generated a lot of reactions from fans. Saban's daughter Kristen, who has been thrilled with his new endeavor, also reacted to Davis’ post.
“Omg,” Kristen Saban wrote with a laughing emoji.
College GameDay crew have been impressed working with Nick Saban
Nick Saban's addition to the College GameDay broadcast crew has not only captivated college football fans but also intrigued his fellow pregame show members.
GameDay host Rece Davis shared his experience working alongside Saban.
“The thing that I’m not surprised by, but very impressed by, is the level of his engagement,” Davis said on The Paul Finebaum Show. “He’s in our meetings during the week, and we’ll talk to him aside from the meetings. He’s all in, constantly learning, always wanting to be great and be perfect.”
“And not one time has he come across in such a way that he’s like, ‘Hey, look at my seven championship rings and everybody listen to me.’ He would certainly have the résumé to do so and the credentials to do so if he wanted to. But he hasn’t approached it that way.”
Kirby Smart thrilled to see Nick Saban thrive in his new endeavor
Georgia comes up against Alabama this weekend in a highly anticipated SEC encounter. However, Kirby Smart won't have to face Nick Saban this time following his retirement. The Bulldogs coach is, however, happy to see Saban get a new opportunity after his illustrious career.
“He’s extremely thorough and enjoys what he does,” Smart said. “I’m thrilled that he gets an opportunity to do what he wants to do and being with who he wants to be with, with his family and enjoy that. I’m really happy he’s still part of college football because he makes college football better.”
Smart served as an assistant under Saban for several years at LSU, Alabama and the Miami Dolphins. He was the defensive coordinator in Tuscaloosa from 2008 to 2015, playing a crucial role in the dominance of the Crimson Tide under Saban's leadership.
