Dan Lanning, head coach of the Oregon Ducks, is gearing up for his first season in the Big Ten Conference. Last season, Lanning guided the program to a 12-2 overall record and a Pac-12 championship game against Washington. Despite losing the conference championship, the Ducks won the Fiesta Bowl against the Liberty Flames.
College football has gone through various changes over the years. With the introduction of new NIL regulations, players can now earn money as college athletes. This upcoming season will also see the implementation of the new 12-team playoff format in college football.
Lanning talked about the ability to adapt according to the needs of the modern era in college football on Pat McAfee's show.
"I spend a lot more time thinking about how can I do it better than everybody else," Lanning said. "And you don't make the rules but as they change can you be the first team to adapt? Can you be the first team to do it in a creative way and take advantage of you know what exists out there cause I think a lot of people are slow to change.
"If you ask me the most important quality of any coach right now in college football I would tell you it's the ability to adapt. You know cause rules change every five months," Lanning added.
Dan Lanning also talked about the impact of college realignment on rivalry games and said that college football right now is getting 'exciting' with each passing day.
"It's part of what makes college football great. So we hope we can hold on to some of those," Lanning said. "I think it'd be hard for anybody to sit here and say watching college football right now is not as exciting as it's ever been."
During last season's rivalry game against Oregon State, Dan Lanning and his team secured a commanding 31-7 victory. Despite the Ducks joining the Big 10 this upcoming season, the rivalry game is still slated to be played in September this year.
Dan Lanning sheds light on the post-Bo Nix era as Dillon Gabriel gears up as his replacement for the 2024 season
Former Oregon QB Bo Nix was an important asset for the program during his two-season stint under Lanning. With him being drafted in this year's NFL draft, Dillon Gabriel is gearing up to be the starting quarterback for the team for their debut Big 10 campaign.
Dan Lanning opened up about the transition from Bo Nix to Gabriel. Despite missing Nix from his squad, the Oregon head coach believes in Gabriel's experience to help them secure a successful 2024 campaign.
"He (Bo Nix) is doing awesome. You know, I miss Bo man, I get to be a fan from afar. Now watching what he does, but that's what's exciting about college football is you don't get to keep the same team for 10 years," Lanning said.
"When you talk about big games and Bo obviously had experience but now we have a guy you know, in Dillon Gabriel that's got a lot of experience, right? He's played a lot of college football games, there'll be a transition, we gotta lean in on, you know, each player strengths."
It will be interesting to see if the Oregon Ducks can emerge as a contender in the new 12-team playoff format.
