Outgoing Boise State Broncos offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter has made a major accusation against Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks. In an interview on KTIK’s “Prater & The Ballgame” on Monday, Koetter accused the Ducks of tampering after their Fiesta Bowl loss to Penn State. (Start at 33:18)
“I know for a fact that just last week, after the Fiesta Bowl, one of the key starters on defense got a call from the Oregon Ducks offering him $700,000,” Dirk Koetter said.
During their conversation about the transfer portal, Koetter also brought up Boise State left tackle Kage Casey, a potential first-round NFL pick. He claims Casey could have gotten around $1 million if he had entered the portal.
Koetter, who decided to retire after the season citing the changing landscape of college football, believes that there is a large disparity in budget from the top teams to what the Broncos can offer student-athletes. (Start at 31:50)
“Let’s get some numbers out there. Our salary cap is $2 million, and that’s up from maybe something like $1.6 million last year, but it’s around $2 million. Every calendar year, that’s what it is right now, and trying to grow it. But the people we’re competing against, maybe not in our current conference, but where we’re going and who we’re expected to compete against, it’s as high as $20 million.”
Boise State finished the season with a 12-2 record, making the CFP quarterfinals before losing to Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl. Their only regular season loss came against Oregon.
Dirk Koetter credits Boise State head coach for job he's doing
Dirk Koetter credited Broncos head coach Spencer Danielson for creating a solid program despite having a limited budget.
The Broncos were able to maintain most of their core for the upcoming season, with only one starter, wide receiver Prince Strachan, entering the transfer portal. (Start at 27:52)
“Spencer is a players’ coach, but yet he holds the accountable. He’s out there raising money. He works so hard. He was sweating it down until yesterday at midnight as far as was he going to be able to keep all these guy,” Dirk Koetter said.
The Broncos will have to make some adjustments for next season. Talented running back Ashton Jeanty will enter the NFL Draft, while Nate Potter will replace Koetter as offensive coordinator. But not losing many starters to the transfer portal is a positive step going forward.
