The Oregon Ducks under coach Dan Lanning have arrived in the Big Ten to much acclaim and are one of the favorites for the championship game. The Big Ten has been heralded as a different and more physical conference than the defunct Pac-12 the Ducks are used to posing their biggest challenge.
In a clip posted on Instagram that shows behind-the-scenes happenings in the Ducks' Fall camp, the confident Oregon coach fired up his players, challenging them to step up to the Big Ten challenge.
"So thrilled to have you guys back, I'm so proud of where this team's at, we got a lot of work to do. When we're locked on, there's nothing stronger than us. When they come to play the team out West, we should be a pain in the ass. We're the unknown, they don't really know us. They're gonna say that we're the hunted, we hunt this year," Lanning said.
Dan Lanning addresses the physicality of the Big Ten
In the Fall camp video posted by Oregon on Instagram, Fox Sports analyst Joel Klatt addressed the issue of the Ducks being regarded as a soft target due to their flashy uniforms and snazzy facilities. He warned Big Ten teams not to underestimate them.
The physical challenge of the Big Ten has been bandied about as a reason why Oregon will struggle in the new conference.
Coach Dan Lanning addressed those concerns during an interview on the "Joel Klatt Show," highlighting both the differences between the conferences and his team's readiness to deal with that facet of the new conference.
"I think there are pieces of flavor that are really similar," Lanning said. "We had some teams that played a physical brand of football in Utah and Oregon State but certainly Michigan is different with the brand of football they play. The weather is going to come into play a little bit more with some of the places we'll travel and the times of the year we'll be traveling there.
"Entering this conference, there's some new challenges that are presented," Lanning said. “A lot of people ask me, what's different about going to the Big Ten? I hear it's a lot more physical. I'll tell you here at Oregon, we chase and attack those challenges."
Dan Lanning will have to cope with the pressure of his team being second favorites (+210) for the Big Ten championship just behind the Ohio State Buckeyes (+155), according to FanDuel Sportsbook, way ahead of reigning national champions, the Michigan Wolverines (+750).
