Junior tight end Oscar Delp suffered an injury on Saturday in Georgia’s Week 2 victory over Tennessee Tech. The tight end limped out of the game with an ankle injury in the second quarter and never returned. This raised fear among fans amid the Bulldogs' current injury struggles.
Heading into the game, the Bulldogs were already dealing with several injuries to key players. Losing Delp halfway through the non-conference game compounded the injury woes. Running back Nate Frazier also exited the game in the third quarter with an injury.
Oscar Delp’s injury update
Following his exit from the field in the 48-3 win, Oscar Delp received necessary medical attention in the injury tent and went into the locker room with the team at halftime. He returned to the sideline in the second half with a tennis shoe and was ruled out of the game.
Georgia coach Kirby Smart provided a positive update on Delp’s status after the game.
“He has a slight ankle sprain. I thought he could’ve played,” Smart said regarding Delp’s injury.
When will Oscar Delp return?
Considering the update from Kirby Smart after the Tennessee Tech game, Oscar Delp is expected to return to action for Georgia in Week 3. The tight end is doing well as a replacement for Brock Bowers, who went to the NFL's Las Vegas Raiders.
Should Delp fail to return in the next game against Kentucky, sophomore Lawson Luckie and Stanford transfer Benjamin Yurosek are expected to see increased playing time.
Luckie made the most of his opportunities on Saturday, hauling in two passes for 43 yards, including a 37-yard touchdown on Carson Beck’s final pass of the game. His expanded roles will undoubtedly be pivotal for Georgia moving forward.
