The Pac-12 is trying to rebuild after collapsing this decade. Currently, the conference only has two teams: the Washington State Cougars and the Oregon State Beavers. However, that is likely to change.
Last week, it was announced that Boise State, San Diego State, Colorado State and Fresno State will join the Pac-12 in 2026.
The conference now has six members. Eight teams are needed to meet NCAA and College Football Playoffs requirements. This will be vital for the conference in 2026 when its former schools lose legacy status.
The Pac-12 must add two programs before the deadline. Commissioner Teresa Gould is currently focused on adding the Memphis Tigers.
Memphis is one of the few schools that wasn't part of college football's mass realignment.
What adding the Memphis Tigers does for the Pac-12
If Memphis joins the Pac-12, a second mass CFB realignment could occur. Expanding their reach to Tennessee might bring the conference fresh recruiting territory.
Memphis joining the Pac-12 would also send a message to the group of five conferences: If they can sway Memphis, they can likely add Tulane and South Florida.
Then, New Mexico State, UNLV, Texas State and Ohio may solidify their ranks. These schools would benefit from the Pac-12's reconstruction vision.
If its latest additions are any indication, the once proud Pac-12 is well on its way to finding a respectable place in the new CFB landscape.
