Earlier this week, Nebraska Cornhuskers quarterback Dylan Raiola turned up to training camp looking like the spitting image of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. This has led to many comparisons between the players.
Raiola has been widely touted as a generational talent and the next Mahomes. But, which of these two players had the better time in high school.
Dylan Raiola in high school
During his freshman season, Raiola played in Texas for Burleson High School. He threw for 3,341 yards and scored 32 touchdowns, with nine additional rushing touchdowns. His performances won him the district MVP.
Raiola relocated in 2022 to Arizona, where he was equally dominant. He threw for 2,435 yards and scored 22 touchdowns, leading his team to a state semifinal.
2023 brought another relocation, this time to Georgia. But, this did not harm Raiola's performance. He threw for 34 touchdowns this season and had five games where he threw for four touchdowns.
As well as playing football, Raiola also played baseball, but this only occurred during his freshman season.
Patrick Mahomes in High School
Patrick Mahomes attended Whitehouse High School in Texas and would stay there for all of his time in high school.
During the two seasons, he was the starting quarterback for Whitehouse, Mahomes threw for 8,436 yards and scored 96 touchdowns (50 in his first season and 46 in his second).
Those results made him the 29th-ranked quarterback prospect at the time, according to 247sports.com. However, Mahomes was known for being a multisport athlete during high school. As well as being on the football team, Mahomes was the star of the baseball and basketball teams.
This has made him an anomaly around other strong quarterbacks, as Mahomes is an extremely talented three-sport athlete, while many other top quarterbacks focused only on football during high school.
How do they compare?
In terms of passing yards, Raiola has more, but the number of touchdowns he has from three seasons does not match the number Mahomes had from two.
Raiola appeared to be the better quarterback, but Mahomes was the better all-around athlete. Many sources have linked the number of sports Mahomes played at an elite level when he was young to the success he has in the NFL with the Chiefs.
In general, both players have the opportunity to become the main quarterback of their generation, and this is something that Raiola has the talent to become.
