Arch Manning was spotted with former Texas Longhorns quarterback Vince Young before the Longhorns' game with rivals the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday. A photo of the two embracing was posted on the Longhorns' Instagram page before the game.
Manning has had a strong start to his time as a consistent player for the Longhorns. After spending most of his first year on the bench, he became the starting QB after Quinn Ewers' injury.
Manning has thrown for 901 yards and nine touchdowns this season. However, he was also strong on his feet, scoring a 67-yard touchdown. This was a play that a lot of people, including Vince Young, reacted to at the time.
Arch Manning will want to replicate the success that Young had while with the Longhorns.
Young was with the team between 2003-2005. His strongest season was in 2005. He threw for 3,036 yards and 26 touchdowns and led Texas to a national championship.
This came in the 2005 Rose Bowl game, where Young's Longhorns had a shock victory over the USC Trojans, who had Reggie Bush in their ranks.
With the current state of the Longhorns roster, Arch Manning is in a good position to be the next quarterback to lead the program to a national championship.
Vince Young once recalled the 2005 Red River game
In his time with the Texas Longhorns, Vince Young played against the Oklahoma Sooners three times. He was on the losing side in 2003 and 2004 but led the team to a 45-12 victory in 2005.
Young was heavily part of a pivotal play in the Longhorns' win. This was a 64-yard touchdown pass from Young to Billy Pittman.
To add to this, it has been reported that the Sooners knew what play the Longhorns were going to do.
Even with this knowledge, they still conceded a touchdown that helped the Longhorns to win the game. After the game, Young spoke about this play.
"I told the guys, If they call out our play, we’re gonna laugh when we score," Young said. "We all laughed."
In 2018, Young talked about that play in an interview with The Dallas Morning News.
"Yeah, that was definitely a true story right there," Young said. "Kasey Studdard, one of the offensive linemen, was very nervous because the defensive guys were yelling out the play that we were about to run. ... We went out there and ran the same play, and Billy Pittman made a great catch. ... I thought that was pretty cool.
The touchdown just before halftime gave Texas an 18-point lead.
This was one of the numerous important victories the Texas Longhorns had on their way to winning the 2005 National Championship undefeated.
This is a feat that Arch Manning and Quinn Ewers could repeat this season.
