Ole Miss Rebels quarterback Jaxson Dart is generating a lot of hype during the college football preseason. The discourse around the talented quarterback went a notch higher when he was selected to the prestigious Davy O'Brien watchlist alongside 35 other prospects, including Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders and Texas Longhorns star Quinn Ewers.
The feel-good factor around the Rebels continued with coach Lane Kiffin's team being ranked No. 6 in the recently released AP Preseason Top 25 Poll.
A few weeks before Ole Miss begins its season, Dart and Knox Kiffin, the coach's son, smiled for a picture posted by the Rebels coach on Instagram.
It was captioned:
"The smiles…. 💙💙."
Jaxson Dart tempers Ole Miss expectations
The Ole Miss Rebels have been on a roll under coach Lane Kiffin's guidance, registering two consecutive 10+ win seasons and returning most of last year's starters.
The Rebels have also recruited well in both transfer portals. According to On3, they had the No. 1 recruiting class in the spring portal to complement their already talented roster led by quarterback Jaxson Dart.
Dart threw for 3,364 yards, resulting in 23 touchdowns and just 5 interceptions last season, showing the ability that he's always been lauded for.
He is considered one of the top returning quarterbacks in college football. Still, while speaking to reporters after Fall camp, Jaxson Dart revealed that he isn't getting carried away with the hype surrounding Ole Miss in the preseason.
"Yeah, absolutely, we match up, just from a talent perspective if you'd go guy by guy," Jaxson Dart said. "But just because you have a talented roster doesn't make you a great team, and you see that in the SEC every year. There are teams who are predicted to have a great year in preseason and they don't live that out. So when you play in such a great conference like this, you really have to be on your toes because in any given week you could slip up and lose the game because you play against the best competition.
"Our job right now is to build that team regardless of what talent we have. We need to come together as a team and we have the urgency to do that."
Jaxson Dart has a huge shot at winning several of the most prestigious individual awards in college football if he can lead the Ole Miss Rebels to glory during a season that feels like one of the most open in recent memory.
