The Pittsburgh Panthers matched up with the Toledo Rockets in the 2024 GameAbove Sports Bowl on Thursday. After respective 7-5 campaigns, the two schools will meet for just the fourth time in their history.
After a 7-0 start to the season, the Panthers came plummeting back down to earth, losing each of their final five games down the stretch of the season. Pitt closed its season out with a 34-23 loss versus Boston College back on Nov. 30.
Toledo saw similar struggles to Pitt after riding high to start the season. The Rockets opened the year with a 4-1 record but finished the season with a lackluster 3-4 record in their final seven games.
Toledo opened the game looking like the superior team, taking a 20-12 lead into the locker rooms at halftime. Looking to rebound, Pitt responded with an 18-point performance in the second half, taking the Rockets to overtime with momentum on their side.
In overtime, the two sides exchanged rushing touchdowns from their quarterbacks, forcing a second overtime period. The Rockets took a 40-37 lead with a 33-yard field goal but were matched with a field goal from Pitt, forcing a third overtime with the score at 40-40.
Each side converted their two-point attempts, bringing the score to 42-42 entering the fourth overtime. The officials were forced to clear the field twice in the fourth overtime after Toledo players celebrated, thinking they'd won. The two sides each converted, taking a 44-44 score into the second overtime.
Both sides converted in overtime No. 5, with Toledo remaining on the field for the sixth overtime. After converting, the Rockets held Pitt scoreless, securing a 48-46 win after a mind-boggling six overtime periods.

Pitt vs. Toledo: Game Summary
Toledo opened the game fast, marching 73 yards in seven plays before Tucker Gleason connected with Anthony Torres for a two-yard passing touchdown, giving Toledo a 6-0 lead. Pitt blocked the ensuing extra point, returning it for a defensive PAT conversion, cutting the lead to 6-2.
After exchanging punts, Pitt mustered a methodical 11-play, 79-yard drive capped off by a short rushing score from Desmond Reid, giving the Panthers a 9-6 lead over Toledo. Pitt maintained its momentum, forcing a punt on defense before a 57-field goal extended the Panthers' lead to 12-6.
The two sides exchanged punts again before Gleason connected with Junior Vandeross III for an explosive 67-yard touchdown, giving Toledo a 13-12 lead. On Pitt's ensuing drive, Braden Awls grabbed an interception and returned it 42 yards for a pick-six, extending the Rockets' lead to 20-12 entering the half.
Pitt scored the lone points of the third quarter, starting with an 11-yard pitch-and-catch from Julian Dugger to Jake Overman for an 11-yard score. The Panthers converted the two-point conversion to tie the game at 20-20. After forcing a fumble on the ensuing drive, Pitt kicked a 37-yard field goal to take a 23-20 lead.
The Panthers carried the momentum into the final period of regulation, extending its lead to 30-20 after a 16-yard touchdown catch from Raphael Williams Jr. The Panthers forced a punt, but their momentum was halted after Darius Alexander plucked an interception out of the air and returned it 58 yards for the Rockets' second pick-six of the game.
After forcing a punt, Toledo capitalized with a 51-yard field goal to force overtime. In overtime, Pitt recaptured their momentum with a two-yard touchdown run from Dugger. Toledo responded with a short rushing score from Gleason, tying the game at 37-37.
The Rockets kicked a 33-yard field goal to take a 40-37 lead in the second overtime and were matched by Pitt, taking a 40-40 lead into the third overtime. The sides exchanged blows until Toledo forced a stop in the sixth overtime to secure a 48-46 win.
