Alabama Crimson Tide coach Kalen DeBoer has made his case for his 9-3 team to make it into the College Football Playoff this year. Speaking on Tuesday's edition of "The Pat McAfee Show," DeBoer explained why he thinks his team will get into the CFP.
"There's a committee that has some tough decisions to make, and we all get that ... The way we see it, we're one of the best 12 teams and we understand who we are ... We have to be ready if we get a playoff opportunity."
Here is how college football fans reacted to what DeBoer said.
"Math says 12 spots means 33% less selective. DeBoer knows this dilutes the playoff's statistical significance. Pure market manipulation," the fan said.
"Bama brand come in clutch again 🙏" this fan said.
"Another year where alabama need to go on national TV and beg for a spot in the playoffs 😂😂😂" another fan said.
These fans questioned why McAfee is not talking to South Carolina coach Shane Beamer. South Carolina is also a three-loss team generally seen as a contender for a spot in the CFP.
"Didn’t want to have Beamer on to present South Carolinas case for a spot? Maybe tell ESPN how many views they’d get with Lanorris Sellers in the post season and it’ll change their mind. What a joke if they get in over us," this fan said.
"Assuming y'all told Pat to have Beamer on as well....yea, of course not. Well oiled propaganda machine," another fan said.
Why are Kalen DeBoer and Alabama in this situation?
This season was the first season for Alabama without Nick Saban, as the legendary coach retired at the end of last season. He was replaced by Kalen DeBoer, and the first year of DeBoer's reign has seen the normally strong Crimson Tide regress.
They finished the season with a 9-3 record, which included a statement win over the Georgia Bulldogs and the LSU Tigers.
However, the Crimson Tide suffered shock defeats to Vanderbilt and Oklahoma and only narrowly won against others.
All of these factors will influence the playoff committee's decision. There are numerous three-loss teams all competing for the final few spots. Some teams that could be seen as deserving of a spot (such as the South Carolina Gamecocks) may miss out.
Kalen DeBoer will hope that Alabama is not on the outside looking in come next week.
