Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers missed last week's win over the UL Monroe Warhawks due to an abdominal injury. He was replaced by Arch Manning, who made his debut as a starting quarterback.

This week, the Longhorns open their first-ever conference schedule in the SEC against the Mississippi State Bulldogs. However, questions have been raised as to whether Ewers would be available to play.

Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian has given an update on Ewers' condition. He described it as:

"Improved."

However, while Ewers' condition has improved in the eyes of Sarkisian, he could still not be able to play in the game against Mississippi State. The coach went on to say:

"We're not trying to pull the wool over anybody's eyes."

In the Longhorns injury report, Ewers is listed as 'questionable'. This means he could play, but there is also a chance that he might not.

Sarkisian is not trying to play mind games with the Bulldogs team. At the moment, it could go either way.

As for when a decision will be taken on who is the starting quarterback for the game with Mississippi State, Sarkisian said this will be done on Friday, a day before the game.

If Ewers is unavailable, then it will be Arch Manning, who will be leading the Texas Longhorns into their first game against a fellow SEC rival.

Could Texas play Trey Owens at quarterback instead of Quinn Ewers?

Apart from Quinn Ewers, Steve Sarkisian has also given an update on Trey Owens.

Owens is the third-string quarterback for the Longhorns, who was the backup for Arch Manning during last week's win. Sarkisian said on the freshman quarterback that:

"Trey Owens had his best week of practice."

Owens has played four snaps this season, all in the game against the UTSA Roadrunners. For those four snaps, he completed two passes for 19 yards.

A four-star prospect, Owens is not expected to play this week. This will allow fans to see how Arch Manning (and potentially Quinn Ewers) fare against a Bulldogs team that has been struggling during the season so far.

However, as we have seen this season, when the Longhorns have a big lead in the fourth quarter, they do make a QB change to bring in the backup to give them some snaps. This is why Arch Manning had been making appearances during the end of games.

If Texas can have a large, unassailable lead against the Bulldogs in the fourth quarter, this could give Trey Owens an opportunity to play.
