Texas QB Quinn Ewers played a crucial part in the Longhorns' hard-fought victory over Vanderbilt in Week 9. After suffering their first loss of the season at the hands of Georgia, Steve Sarkisian and his team were looking to regain their winning momentum and their journey to a national championship.
The Commodores put up a great fight against their SEC rivals at home. However, Quinn Ewers seemingly found a sense of chemistry and rhythm with his offensive teammates that led to the Longhorns emerging victorious in the end.
Two of his touchdown passes were to wide receiver DeAndre Moore Jr. In the post-game press conference, DeAndre Moore Jr. talked about Ewers' ability to change plays according to the demands of the situation.
He talked about his first touchdown and how the QB changed the play mid-motion to a slot fade. Moore described Quinn Ewers as 'the President' for his ability to act according to the situation.
"So the first one, I was motioning him over, and Quinn changed the play mid motion. He told me another play. So I'm like okay, bet. It's man (coverage), we see, let's go get it. He just called a slot fade and he put in up there, allowed me to go make a play," Moore said.
"He has the ability to do that, especially in this offense. Quinn is the President. So if he sees a look that he may not like, he can change it to something else just like that."
Against the Vanderbilt Commodores, Quinn Ewers completed 27-of-the-37 passes he attempted on the field. He recorded a total of 288 passing yards and three TD passes, along with two interceptions, to lead the Longhorns to a 27-24 victory.
Steve Sarkisian puts his faith in Quinn Ewers's abilities
This season will be Ewers' final collegiate campaign before declaring for the NFL draft next year. The quarterback would love to end his college journey with a national championship to his name. The Longhorns are one of the top contenders in the race to qualify for the playoffs.
In the post-game press conference, Steve Sarkisian shed light on Ewers' importance to the team.
"If he (Quinn Ewers) plays like this for the rest of the year, we are going to be OK. We're going to be just fine," Sarkisian said. "You can't get worse than how it went for Ewers last week, especially in that first half, and then his ability to bounce back and show the resolve that he showed."
"I always say that the sign of the true character of a man is in the face of adversity, and that was a lot of adversity for him."
Steve Sarkisian led the Longhorns to the playoffs last season where they lost to Washington in the semifinals. Now, he has another chance to take his team all the way as they continue their specular debut campaign as members of the SEC.
