The No. 1 Texas Longhorns welcomed back quarterback Quinn Ewers for the heated Red River Rivalry game against the No. 18 Oklahoma Sooners in Week 7 of college football action. The quarterback had been sidelined with an oblique injury, forcing backup quarterback Arch Manning to take the reins and lead the team to the top of the rankings.
Ewers was rusty, throwing an interception during the first drive of the game, which led to the Longhorns not earning a single first down during the first quarter.
Ewers and the Longhorns' offense revved up in the second quarter, and he went 20-of-29 for 199 yards resulting in one touchdown while adding one rushing touchdown in the 34-3 win.
During his postgame press conference, Ewers revealed that he was not satisfied with his overall performance.
"Overall, I think I need to play better," Ewers said. "But I think we did a good job overcoming some adversity early. It was a rough start, but I think overall we did a good job of when adversity struck, we overcame it."
Quinn Ewers still Steve Sarkisian's first choice
When Quinn Ewers was sidelined with his oblique injury, Arch Manning performed admirably, registering 901 yards on 70.5% completion resulting in nine touchdowns and two interceptions. The discourse around the two quarterbacks raged incessantly with some fans even calling for Manning to be named the new Longhorns QB1.
During his weekly press conference ahead of the Red River Rivalry game, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian backed Ewers to the hilt, establishing him as the team's QB1 with Manning as his backup.
"When I was a starter, I never wanted the backup coming in, even for a play. I've got respect for the rhythm that a starting quarterback needs. So, no, that's not something I've ever entertained," Sarkisian said. "Arch wants to learn and grow, and he's done just that. From where he was a year and a half ago to now, it's a credit to his work ethic."
The Texas Longhorns are ranked No. 1 and are widely expected to be one of the top teams in the conference championship game and one of the favorites for the expanded 12-team college playoff. So, having a deep quarterback room cannot hurt.
Ahead of the crucial game against Kirby Smart's Georgia Bulldogs in Week 8 of college football action, Texas fans will be glad to have Quinn Ewers back in action after several weeks of inaction.
