Cam Ward has had a magnificent season under center in his lone year with the Miami Hurricanes. He has led Miami to a 10-2 record and is tied for the third-best odds – and the best odds of any quarterback – to win the Heisman Trophy, trailing only Colorado Buffaloes two-way star Travis Hunter and Boise State Broncos running back Ashton Jeanty.
Despite its strong season, Miami ranked just 12th in the latest College Football Playoff rankings released Tuesday after a stunning loss at Syracuse on Saturday. That position could keep the Hurricanes out of the playoff when the bracket is revealed on Sunday.
He took aim at the selection committee on Wednesday in an On3 story:
"I mean, at the end of the day them boys who in that committee, I really doubt they watch tape or not. I mean you can’t, I mean, we’re a 10-2 team. Not saying Alabama‘s not a good team, which they are, but let’s talk about them points. That’s probably the biggest factor, I believe. We’ve got a top 25 defense, which is actually one of the best defenses in the country.
"So, both sides of the ball, we’re one of the best teams in the country. You talk about an offense who puts points on the board left and right, whether it’s passing, whether it’s throwing. We’ve got two great running backs in the backfield in (Damien Martinez) and Mark (Fletcher Jr.), so it’s hard to leave that out."
Although ranked 12th in the latest College Football Playoff rankings, Miami will be jumped by the winner of the Big 12 Championship Game as the committee will first place the five highest-ranked conference champions in the final bracket. Arizona State (No. 15 in the CFP) and Iowa State (No. 16) will play on Saturday, with the winner taking one of the top 12 spots.
The Hurricanes fell short of the ACC Championship Game and do not have a clear path to moving up in the rankings.
Cam Ward also took shots at the SEC following latest CFP rankings update
Cam Ward did not reserve his comments for the College Football Playoff selection committee. The Miami Hurricanes quarterback also took shots at the Southeastern Conference, making it clear that he believes the Atlantic Coast Conference was better defensively throughout the season:
"We’re playing better defenses, in my opinion, than the SEC. So, it’s just hard. I did what I could. The team, we controlled what we can control. We controlled our own destiny for a lot of the season, and we didn’t end up getting the job done.
"So, we know it’s all in our hands, and it got taken away from us when we lost. So, it’s nothing that we can do about it now but just sit there, be patient and just try to get an opportunity to play for another game."
It is difficult to agree with Ward's assessment as the SEC had five defensive units ranked in the top 14 in scoring defense. Meanwhile, the highest-ranked ACC unit, the SMU Mustangs, had the 19th-best scoring defense in college football. The Hurricanes ranked just 60th in scoring defense. Only three of the SEC's 16 teams allowed more points per game.
