The Colorado Buffaloes fell to their second loss of the season in a thrilling contest against the Kansas State Wildcats on Saturday. Coach Prime and his team could not preserve their winning streak at home despite their best efforts. The Wildcats were just the better team in Week 7 and persevered through every challenge the Buffs threw at them.
In the fourth quarter of this exciting Big 12 contest, Colorado took the lead for the first time. QB Shedeur Sanders found LaJohntay Wester with an 11-yard TD pass to flip the game in their favor. However, Kansas State quickly replied thanks to a 50-yard TD pass from Avery Johnson to Jayce Brown, making the score 31-28 in their favor.
In a last-ditch attempt to clinch the win, Shedeur Sanders threw a hail mary to the sidelines to Will Sheppard. Unfortunately, Sheppard failed to catch the pass while the Buffs' call for a pass interference was not given by the referees. This was the final nail in the coffin as Kansas State played out the final seconds of the game for the win.
Fans debated the last-ditch effort from Deion Sanders' team to emerge victorious against the Wildcats. One fan allegedly the referees were cheating to help the Wildcats win.
"Refs cheating the Buffs as usual."
This fan criticized both the call by the referee and the play by Shedeur Sanders.
"The defender didn't even look back at the ball!!! Bad call or whoever was commentating get they behinds out the booth! Goodness. Also yea bad play by Sanders you go for broke early in downs not but it's all next try again next week."
Another fan believes that it was the right decision by the officials.
"Ball was out of bounds. Buffs don't get bailed by the refs this week."
This fan detailed how it would not be a pass interference since Sheppard was in no position to catch the pass from Shedeur.
"I believe the letter of the rule for defensive pass interference, the ball has to be catchable. I don't think Sheppard would have caught it. I was rooting for Colorado to win."
Another fan believed that the Kansas State defender tackled Sheppard before he had the chance to catch the ball.
"Definitely tackling him before the ball arrived."
Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders' stats vs Kansas State
Shedeur Sanders had a tough night as Colorado lost both Jimmy Horn Jr. and Travis Hunter in the first half of the game due to injuries. Horn has been one of Shedeur's favorite targets on the field this season.
Despite the lack of firepower on the offense, Shedeur completed 34-of-the-40 passes he attempted. He tallied 388 passing yards and three TD passes for the Buffs with one interception in the game. This brings his season stats to 2,018 passing yards and 17 TD passes in six games.
The Colorado Buffaloes will take on the Arizona Wildcats in Week 8. It will be interesting to see if Coach Prime can lead his team to qualify for the bowl games this season.
