Black Monday has passed in the NFL and a few more coaching vacancies have been added. There are a couple more rumored firings, but this is the time when interviews for said vacancies are starting to be announced.
As per On3 Sports' Brad Biggs, Iowa State Cyclones head coach Matt Campbell will be on the list of interviews for the Chicago Bears' vacant head coaching job.
Campbell has been with the Cyclones since 2016, transforming the program struggling to find its footing in the Big 12 to a contender and conference champion in a few years.
He has compiled a 64-51 record in his tenure in Ames, with his 10-3 record this season being the best. It was good enough for them to be in the Big 12 conference championship game, but they lost to the Arizona State Sun Devils 45-19. It also was not enough for them to secure a spot in the 12-team College Football Playoff, but they did manage to win the Pop-Tarts Bowl against Miami.
Chicago's vacancy looks enticing
Matt Campbell’s potential new employers are an enticing prospect, but the team needs a major culture change. After drafting Caleb Williams with the number one overall pick in last year’s NFL draft and surrounding him with weapons from the draft, through trades and free agency, the Bears then proceeded to post a disappointing 5-12 record. Way below the expected record most pundits had on this team.
The problems started with coaching, where former head coach Matt Eberflus posted one coaching blunder after another right until his biggest blunder on Week 13 against the Detroit Lions where he showed a total lack of clock management.
The offense struggled as well despite the talent level, lacking innovation and imagination. Even a midseason change from Shane Waldron to Thomas Brown did not help change things.
Bears GM Ryan Poles is searching high and wide for his new head coach. It will be interesting to see who will have the task of restoring the franchise's prized No. 1 overall draft pick's confidence, who looked lost and even confused at times this season. Even though he has shown flashes of superstar talent, his next coach will be crucial for his development.
Add to that the task of changing the culture where the Bears appear to still be living off their 1985 magic and can’t seem to evolve into a league that’s turning more offensive-minded.
