Legendary coach Bill Belichick has agreed a five-year, $50 million contract to become the next coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels. This is a bit of a full circle moment, as his father was an assistant coach of the school during the 1950s.

He will replace Mack Brown, who was fired a few weeks ago but was allowed to finish the regular season. It's unclear at this point if Belichick will coach the Pop Tarts Bowl game against the UConn Huskies in the shadows of his old home, Fenway Park in Boston, Mass.

In a statement from the press release announcing the news, Bill Belichick discussed his excitement to be a part of Chapel Hill.

"I am excited for the opportuity at UNC-Chapel Hill. I grew up around college football with my Dad and treasured those times. I have always wanted to coach in college and now I look forward to building the football program in Chapel Hill." h/t UNC

There was some confusion regarding his contract, as The Athletic reported Belichick had signed for three years and $30 million. However, the school's release announcing the news said that it's for five years and The Athletic clarified the deal would be for $50 million, maintaining the average annual value of his contract as $10 million.

This figure of $10 million per season will have Bill Belichick tied for the sixth-highest-paid coaches in college football. Below is the top 10:

  • 1) Kirby Smart, Georgia: $13.28 million
  • 2) Dabo Swinney, Clemson: $11.13 million
  • 3) Steve Sarkisian, Texas: $10.6 million
  • 4) Lincoln Riley, USC: $10.04 million
  • 5) Ryan Day, Ohio State: $10.02 million
  • t6) Bill Belichick, North Carolina: $10 million
  • t6) Mike Norvell, Florida State: $10 million
  • t6) Kalen DeBoer, Alabama: $10 million
  • 9) Brian Kelly, LSU: $9.98 million
  • 10) Mark Stoops, Kentucky: $9.01 million
