Rutgers QB starting projections 2024: Who will be Greg Schiano's QB1?

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights will have a new quarterback in 2024. Rutgers had Gavin Wimsatt as their starting QB in 2023, but he transferred to Kentucky.

Entering 2024, Rutgers did land a QB in the transfer portal, who likely will be the starting QB. But, entering 2024, let's look at the Scarlet Knights QB depth chart ahead of the college football season.

Who will be Rutgers' starting quarterback in 2024?

Athan Kaliakmanis will be the Rutgers Scarlett Knights' starting quarterback in 2024, as he was named the starter after spring practices.

“I’m super grateful and blessed,” Kaliakmanis said, via APP.com. “But I haven’t arrived yet. It’s time to work, getting the guys together and doing the things that aren’t required. That’s the main focus right now, just getting ready for training camp... I feel very comfortable in this system now, especially working with the guys, getting a deeper understanding of the offense with Coach Ciarrocca. It’s been really exciting.

Kaliakmanis transferred from Minnesota to Rutgers to be their starting QB. Last season at Minnesota, Kaliakmanis went 156-for-294 for 1,838 yards for 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Kaliakmanis will be handed the job as he has experience in the Big Ten and should help Rutgers' offense out.

What is Rutgers' quarterback depth chart like?

Behind Kaliakmanis is returning quarterback Ajani Sheppard, who went 2-for-2 last season for 23 yards. Sheppard was a three-star recruit in the class of 2023.

Sheppard will be the backup QB and behind him will be freshman Colin O'Sullivan and AJ Surace, a three-star recruit in the class of 2024.

But, outside of Kaliakmanis, it is a QB room with not much college football experience.

The Scarlet Knights will open its 2024 season on Aug. 29 against Howard. Rutgers will have notable games against Washington, Nebraska, Wisconsin, USC, Minnesota and Michigan State.
