Greg Sankey did not waste time taking a jab at other college football conferences around the country, including Brett Yormark's Big 12. Speaking at the opening day of the SEC Media Days 2024 on Monday, the SEC commissioner pointed out that the conference was the only one that was still within its regional base. He said it amid a flurry of conference realignment moves across the Big 12 and more.
The SEC Media Days 2024 kicked off at the Omni Hotel in Dallas, Texas, on Monday. It is scheduled till Thursday with the head coaches of all the teams in the conference slated to talk to the media. First on the lineup was the SEC commissioner, who highlighted the difference between his conference and all the others.
“We know who we are in the Southeastern Conference," Greg Sankey said. "We’re the one conference at this level where the name still means something. The Southeastern part of the United States, where when we expanded, we actually restored historic rivalries while adding only 100 miles to the longest campus-to-campus trip our student-athletes will experience.”
Five teams have joined the Big 12 this season, effectively disbanding the Pac-12 conference. These teams include Deion Sanders' Colorado Buffaloes, the Utah Utes, Arizona Razorbacks and Arizona State Sun Devils. Last year, they added BYU, Houston, Cincinnati and the University of Central Florida.
The SEC has also welcomed two new entrants into the conference this year. The Big 12 saw the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners leave to join it.
