The world of sports betting continues to be viewed under the microscope as more states officially legalize it. One of the states that have been going through an intriguing time since the United States Supreme Court made it legal has been Florida. However, the news coming out of the Supreme Court signifies a potential changing of the guard.
On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to take a challenge to an agreement that allowed the Seminole Tribe exclusivity to handle online sports betting in the state of Florida. During the decision, the court denied a petition from opponents as West Flagler Associates and the Bonita-Fort-Myers Corp were looking for an alternate decision.
This legal battle has been going on for a while as the Florida Supreme Court ruled that the companies filed the wrong type of petition to challenge the 2021 ruling. As a result, the compact between the Seminole Tribe and the state will run until 2051.
Daniel Wallach, a south Florida attorney and sports betting law expert explained what this means going forward.
"What's important with today's announcement is that the most significant barrier to only sports betting in Florida has been removed.
"Tribes in others states stand to benefit from this decision because now they have a clear roadmap that has cleared judical review. I would expect to see other efforts ramped up in other states." h/t Associated Press
As a result of this decision, the Hard Rock Sportsbook will be the only online sports betting legally allowed in the Sunshine State.
