Ohio State defensive end Jack Sawyer is part of the rampant Buckeyes team that swept all opposition in the college football playoffs to reach the national championship game. The Buckeyes beat the Texas Longhorns 28-14 in the Cotton Bowl Classic to accomplish the feat on Friday.
Sawyer delivered a game-changing moment when he sacked Texas quarterback and former Ohio State roommate, the embattled Quinn Ewers, resulting in a 83-yard touchdown. During the postgame news conference, a jubilant Sawyer revealed his thought process as he recovered the ball and raced toward the end zone.
"Sh*t, I guess just don't fall like Will did," Jack Sawyer said. "No, I'm joking but seriously, I hit about the 30 and I look back and I hope I got some blockers because I'm running out of steam here and they were running with me side by side and that just speaks volumes to who this team is too you know. We always have each other's backs and it was a special moment."
"I love Columbus, I love the state of Ohio and I love Ohio State football and like I said about a million times, God is great, he's put this team in such a great spot and I'm just so fortunate to be playing in the national championship my last year here."
Jack Sawyer reveals what Quinn Ewers said after fumble
Jack Sawyer and Quinn Ewers were part of Ohio State's 2021 class and were also roommates for one season. During the postgame news conference, the defensive end revealed what Ewers said to him after he sacked the quarterback and scored the decisive touchdown of the game.
"He said 'screw you' and started laughing," Jack Sawyer said. "That's my boy."
In his interview, Quinn Ewers reflected on the play as he watched Sawyer score the game-winning touchdown.
"I felt him (Sawyer), I started drifting away and I thought I was gonna be able to get the ball off before he got there obviously," Quinn Ewers said. "It's not like I tried to give them the game but I saw Jack running with the ball down the sideline and you know it sucks men, we know he's a great player, great individual, great person. We were roommates when I was up at Ohio State. It sucks but Jack's a great player and he made a great play."
The decisive moment of the Cotton Bowl Classic ultimately came down to a showdown between two former roommates, and Jack Sawyer emerged victorious.
