Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers has come in for heavy criticism over the past few weeks due to his performance in the Southeastern Conference championship game loss to the Georgia Bulldogs. Ewers has been much improved in the College Football Playoff, leading the No. 4 Longhorns to the semifinals after a 39-31 Peach Bowl win over the No. 10 Arizona State Sun Devils on Wednesday.

Ewers threw a costly interception in the game that allowed the Sun Devils to tie the game from a 24-8 deficit in the fourth quarter. He more than made up for his mistake with a flawless performance in the final five minutes of regulation and double overtime, where he went 11-of-14 for 161 yards, resulting in two touchdowns.

Before the Peach Bowl game, reports by On3 linked Quinn Ewers to a lucrative $6 million offer to enter the transfer portal and join an unnamed school instead of declaring for the 2025 NFL draft.

During Wednesday's segment of the "Nightcap" show, analyst Shannon Sharpe advised Ewers to consider returning to college football for an extra year like Joe Burrow did when he left the Ohio State Buckeyes to join the LSU Tigers and won the Heisman Trophy in 2020.

"I don't see special," Sharpe said (24:30). " I see a good college football quarterback but I don't see special. I don't see a guy that 'boy if they get him, he's gonna drastically change their fortunes.' I don't see that.
"He (Ewers) might come back and get better because nobody saw that if you had asked teams that were gonna look at Joe Burrow before he came back for his senior year, Joe Burrow didn't seem special but he came back for that year and he was special."

Quinn Ewers criticized after Peach Bowl performance

Quinn Ewers has been the subject of widespread criticism from analysts. During Wednesday's segment of "The Colin Cowherd" podcast, former NFL scout John Middlekauff piled in with his analysis of the quarterback's performance in the Peach Bowl against the Arizona State Sun Devils.

"Yeah, to me, I've been as critical on Sark as anyone over the years. I'm gonna defend him here. I think you can look at Ewers' box score, it doesn't look that bad," Middlekauff said. "He's 20/30, 322. To me, he's a liability. This is a national championship roster without a national championship quarterback.
"How many times this year have Texas been in a position where they can really put the nail in the coffin and Quinn Ewers turns the ball over? Or they're down in a game like against Georgia and they're coming back and he turns the ball over? I mean, if he was an NFL player, he would be highly highly criticized.
"And I would imagine the Texas Reddit community and the football community, he's a pretty polarizing guy and everyone's like 'We're going to Arch Manning next year, no ifs and buts about it.'"

Quinn Ewers has another chance to boost his draft stock when the Texas Longhorns play against the Ohio State Buckeyes in the College Football Playoff semifinals.
