Deion "Coach Prime" Sanders and the No. 23-ranked Colorado Buffaloes lost the Alamo Bowl 36-14 to the No. 17-ranked BYU Cougars on Saturday. The loss was a disappointing end to a great season for the Buffaloes. It also marked the end of the college careers of two-way star Travis Hunter and quarterback Shedeur Sanders.
Media personality and Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Shannon Sharpe often makes headlines for his bold takes and fiery personality. On Sunday, he released an episode of his podcast, "Nightcap," which he produces with Chad "Ocho" Johnson, another former NFL player.
On the podcast, Sharpe did not mince any words criticizing Coach Prime after Colorado's blowout loss against BYU.
"You gotta have a better effort than this," Sharpe said (1:10). "They were never in the game. You give up a punt return for a touchdown, you give up an onside kick. It's Coach Prime's job to have this team prepared and ready to play better than what they showed today. It's really that simple. Let's not make it, 'oh they had a chance,' no they didn't."
"After the first two series, Ocho, you knew Colorado didn't have no chance of winning this game. I was like damn, they're running circles around you. I thought my TV had glitched, there's no way they're moving that fast (referring to BYU)."
Coach Prime and the Colorado Buffaloes were unable to withstand BYU's offense
Entering the game, this matchup between the Colorado Buffaloes and BYU Cougars was expected to be one of the best non-playoff bowl games. It was a contest that featured two ranked teams, and neither of them had many opt-outs or injuries.
However, that was not the case as the BYU Cougars dominated Coach Prime and the Buffaloes from the start. They went 10-0 in the first quarter and took a 20-0 lead in the first half.
Additionally, the Cougars capitalized on a few unorthodox plays. They kicked an unexpected onside kick in the first quarter, which they recovered, claiming the momentum in the game. Additionally, they scored a 64-yard punt return with five minutes left in the second quarter to increase their lead to 17-0.
Not only were the Colorado Buffaloes outplayed, but Coach Prime was outcoached by Cougars coach Kalani Sitake and his coaching staff. He was not able to respond to the innovative playcalling by BYU, and as a result, the Buffs ended their season with a loss.
