Colorado Buffaloes two-way star Travis Hunter has had an eventful few weeks, personally and professionally, capping off a stellar season by winning college football's most highly-coveted accolade, the Heisman Trophy on December 14.
After the ceremony, he has had to deal with backlash from both fans and analysts concerning his fiancee, Leanna Lenee and her alleged inappropriate behavior at the ceremony.
During Friday's episode of the "Kicking it with Dee" podcast, Hunter revealed how Lenee initially ignored his messages until her brother clued her in on who the Heisman-winning star was.
"Bro, it's crazy 'cause now her brother is like my best friend," Hunter said. "He's here at the house but he's at work right now. He's seen my phone one day and I texted her on Instagram and she never text me back. So, he's seeing that text message and he's like 'You don't know who this is? You don't know who this is bro?'
"She was like, 'I don't care who that is but she's seen my text messages a long time ago and that's when I was nothing, so she still don't even know why she talks to me."
Travis Hunter blamed for fiancee fiasco
On Monday, former NFL star Nate Burleson weighed in on the backlash Travis Hunter and his fiancee are receiving in an interview with TMZ Sports.
“It’s their business. And by that, I mean, it’s everybody else’s business because that couple put it out there,” Burleson said. “All these clips have been put out on social media. So people are responding to Travis Hunter and his girlfriend and pulling up old clips that you, Travis, and her put out to the public. You can’t complain when people respond.
"That’s social media. You can’t say ‘mind your own business’ or ‘keep your opinion to yourself’ when you have shared with everybody. You’ve gotta give Travis grace and you’ve gotta give her grace. They are both navigating these waters for the first time.”
Travis Hunter and Leanna Lenee both deactivated their Instagram accounts as their private lives became cannon fodder for the press and inspired discourse on various social media platforms. The entire fiasco does not seem to be close to dying down with new claims from all corners of the internet emerging seemingly every other day.
