Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders was on the losing side in Week 13 of college football action when the Buffaloes were beaten 37-21 on the road by the Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday to put their Big 12 championship game participation in doubt. Sanders registered 266 yards and three touchdowns but was still powerless to stop the loss that dropped the Buffs to 8-3.
Sanders got some rough treatment in the game and was the recipient of a controversial late hit below the knees by Kansas defensive end Dean Miller in the first half of the game.
The tackle went unpunished by the officials causing widespread discourse on X and on Monday, former New York Jets scout Daniel Kelly joined in on the debate instead choosing to criticize the maverick Buffs quarterback.
"Shedeur Sanders has done absolutely everything in his power to antagonize his opponents over the past two seasons," Kelly tweeted. "I hate seeing hits like this one and I absolutely hate seeing players get hurt, but am I surprised? No. He plays the game the exact same way his dad did with that exact same spirit of antagonism.
"He’s a high injury risk in the NFL because of this and hopefully he doesn’t get himself seriously injured in these games before the draft. Sanders isn’t a victim. He’s passive-aggressive."
Controversial hit on Shedeur Sanders criticized by analyst
During Monday's episode of the "Joel Klatt Show," Fox Sports analyst Joel Klatt lambasted Dean Miller for his tackle on Sanders highlighting the danger of injury it posed to the NFL-bound Colorado quarterback.
"There was something that happened in that game and I gotta tell you, I am thankful that Shedeur Sander's feet were not firmly planted on the ground," Klatt said. "When that Kansas defender took one of the cheapest shots at Shedeur that I have seen in a long, long time. Sanders is rolling out of the pocket, No. 45 (Miller) comes up and he missiles his knees.
"If Shedeur Sander's feet were firmly in the ground and planted, that is every ligament in his knee, it might be a broken leg. That could be a career-ender. That was one of the cheapest shots I've seen in a long time."
During his Kansas postgame news conference, Shedeur Sanders also revealed his shock at the officials choosing not to punish Dean Miller for the tackle, which later snowballed into a scuffle between the two players later in the game, causing the Colorado quarterback to shove a match official.
