Deion Sanders will lead his Colorado (9-3) team against conference rival BYU (10-2) in the Alamo Bowl on Saturday. The Buffaloes had a brilliant 2024 season, recording their best in recent years and setting the tone for the upcoming season under Coach Prime.
The bowl game means a lot to Sanders. This is not because it's his first time as a coach in the Football Bowl Subdivision but because he fulfilled a promise to an long-serving fan. During the offseason, Coach Prime promised a bowl game for Miss Peggy, a 100-year-old Colorado fan.
Before the bowl game on Friday, Deion Sanders emphasized the importance of delivering on his promise in front of enthusiastic fans, with Miss Peggy by his side. Mentioning the strong bonds he has formed with the senior citizen, the coach also made a subtle jab at his two ex-wives.
“We didn't set out to go to the playoffs,” Sanders said. “We didn't give you a number of wins, we set up with one goal, and that was to get Miss Peggy to a bowl game. We did that, didn't we Miss Peggy? That was my most beautiful date I have ever had, and she's not going to divorce me like the other two did.“
Deion Sanders’ unique relationship with Miss Peggy
Deion Sanders has brought a lot of attention to Miss Peggy this season. The old fan has maintained a close relationship with Coach Prime since he arrived in Boulder in 2023. Sanders explained how she received him in the program during her birthday celebration in November.
"She's always greeted me with love, compassion, support, stability, and hope," Sanders told reporters in a press conference in November. "I'm thankful to be celebrating her 100th with her. She is the epitome of CU Buffs, of Buff Nation. She is the rock that holds us all together."
Colorado fans serenaded Miss Peggy with a heartfelt rendition of "Happy Birthday" at Folsom Fied during the Buffaloes' victory over Utah in Week 12, moving her to tears.
According to the university, Miss Peggy and her twin sister Betty began attending Colorado games in the 1940s. Over the past 58 years, as a dedicated season ticket holder, she has visited Folsom Field more than 330 times, showcasing her unwavering commitment to the program.
“It’s been unbelievable, all the attention,” Miss Peggy told USA TODAY Sports. “I feel very humble and very honored. I’m having a good time. The sad part is my sister is not here to do it with me, but everything’s going well. I’m in disbelief at all this attention. I feel so undeserving.”
Securing a win against BYU in the Alamo Bowl will be another gift Deion Sanders and his team can give to Miss Peggy. The age-long Colorado fan will attend the game on Saturday at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
