The NFL Draft begins on Thursday, and the first round could see plenty of quarterbacks selected in the first round.
NFL Network's Tom Pelissero believes six quarterbacks could go in the first round, which would tie the record of six QBs drafted in round one in 1983.
"Right now, sitting here, I would say six quarterbacks go in round one," Pelissero said.
In the 1983 draft, the six quarterbacks selected were John Elway, Todd Blackledge, Jim Kelly, Tony Eason, Ken O'Brien and Dan Marino.
In the 2024 NFL Draft, it's expected that the first three picks will be quarterbacks. Caleb Williams will likely go first overall, and Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye will go second and third overall in some order.
After that, JJ McCarthy, Bo Nix and Michael Penix Jr. could all find themselves being selected in the first round.
In ESPN Mel Kiper Jr.'s latest mock draft, he only had four quarterbacks going in the first round, with Penix Jr. going 33rd overall and Nix 38th overall.
AFC scout hypes up JJ McCarthy ahead of NFL Draft
Entering the 2024 NFL Draft, Michigan Wolverines QB JJ McCarthy has been one of the more interesting prospects.
McCarthy didn't have to throw the ball a ton in college, but one AFC scout was impressed.
"His pro day was ridiculous," the AFC scout said to SI's Albert Breer. "He's a super athlete, a really efficient thrower. I like his skill set."
A coach in the AFC was also impressed with McCarthy's pro day, as he compared his throwing with Caleb Williams.
"J.J.'s got more arm than I thought from what I saw on tape," the coach said. "It was pretty impressive. Every ball wasn't on the face mask, some were behind guys a little, and Caleb's more naturally accurate. But, man, he showed off his arm.
"There was one where he was moving away from internal pressure, drifting left, and throwing [right] to the field—wow. The spiral is tight; the rotation is there. He drove the ball more than Caleb did."
The 2024 NFL Draft takes place in Detroit on Apr. 25-27, with the first round happening on Apr. 25.
