Trey McNutt contributes to the Oregon Ducks' recruiting trail, which has been on fire. Dan Lanning’s team secured a verbal commitment from the five-star safety, adding to its star-studded roster of the 2025 recruiting class.
Hailing from Cleveland, Ohio, McNutt potentially becomes the highest-ranked defensive back to commit to Oregon. With McNutt’s addition, Oregon is ranked sixth, just behind Auburn, which stands as the No. 5 recruiting class in the nation.
College football fans couldn’t resist reacting to Oregon’s recruiting masterclass with comments. One fan quipped:
"Phil Knight in his bag," referring to the Nike co-founder and Oregon mega-booster.
Another compared it to Texas A&M’s 2022 recruiting spree, saying:
"Smells of 2022 Texas A&M. See how long most of these guys stay at Oregon until they transfer."
Some fans took jabs at Ohio State.
One wrote, "Ryan Day shoved in a locker twice in the same day and it's only noon🤣🤣🤣."
Another fan said, "Ohio state stuffed so hard in a locker. Man life is good."
“Dan Lanning is lapping the rest of the country,” said one fan.
"Great get by Oregon. He didn’t even visit OSU so there’s that," tweeted another.
This June, the Ducks landed commitments from top talents like cornerbacks Dorian Brew and Brandon Finney and RB Jordon Davison. They also secured two offensive line prospects, including four-star OT Ziyare Addison from Florida.
What will Oregon get from Trey McNutt?
Oregon fans have a lot to be excited about with the addition of Trey McNutt. The 6-foot athlete from Shaker Heights High School is the No. 23 prospect nationally, per 247Sports. The nation's No. 1 safety brings impressive skills to Oregon's defense.
247Sports' Allen Trieu lauds McNutt as a "track athlete who brings that speed to the football field," highlighting his versatility as both a safety and cornerback.
McNutt is known for his ability to support the run, tackle effectively and take good angles. Trieu also says:
“He has enough size and length but is not elite as far as physical size measureables. Playmaker with toughness and those abilities will translate to wherever a school wants to use him.”
In his junior year at Shaker Heights, McNutt was a two-way star, recording 61 tackles, 12 pass breakups and two forced fumbles. On the offense side, he logged in 611 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns.
