The South Carolina Gamecocks will head into the 2024 season after an average performance in 2023. The team led by coach Shane Beamer finished with a 5-7 record last year. Most of its success came from its quarterback Spencer Rattler.
Rattler had "one of the best seasons" in Gamecocks history. He threw for 3,186 yards, scored 19 touchdowns and recorded eight interceptions. However, Rattler will no longer be with the South Carolina Gamecocks. He had entered the NFL draft and was drafted as a fifth-round pick for the New Orleans Saints.
This means that Beamer will have to pick a new starting QB for the Gamecocks; but who will it be?
Who will be the South Carolina Gamecocks QB1?
Shane Beamer has said who will be the starting QB for South Carolina this season. LaNorris Sellers will fill the space left by Spencer Rattler.
Sellers has been on the team for a season, with 2023 being his freshman year in which he was the backup to Rattler.
He has seen the field, although very briefly. He played four snaps during the Gamecocks' early season game against Furnam. In those four snaps, he recorded 86 yards and scored two touchdowns.
Sellers, who entered the Gamecocks as a highly-ranked high school prospect, has gathered some skills and knowledge from working with Rattler.
Which other QBs does Shane Beamer have on the South Carolina Gamecocks roster?
Other QBs could take over from Sellers if he underperforms this season or gets injured.
Among them is Robby Ashford. Before LaNorris Sellers was announced as the starting QB, it was widely expected that this role would go to Ashford.
The Gamecocks will be the third team Ashford plays on during his college football career. He started with the Oregon Ducks before moving to the Auburn Tigers, where he was the starting QB for the 2022 season, recording 1,613 yards and seven touchdowns. Last season, he was the backup to Payton Thorne. He is expected to repeat this role with the Gamecocks.
However, South Carolina also has the talents of Davis Beville on the roster, and he is expected to be the QB3 in the program. The Gamecocks are Ashford's third program, having spent time with Pittsburgh and the Oklahoma Sooners.
Beville was a backup QB for most of his career. His most notable moment was being named the starting QB for the Sooners in their 2022 Red River clash with the Texas Longhorns. He would only throw for 38 yards, as the Longhorns dominated the Sooners for a 49-0 victory.
