Defenses prevailed in the first half, as both teams held each offense scoreless in the first quarter. After forcing a punt, Clemson capitalized with a three-play, 57-yard drive capped off by a 13-yard touchdown scamper from Cade Klubnik.
The Gamecocks responded with an explosive six-play, 75-yard drive of their own, capped off by a 25-yard touchdown run by LaNorris Sellers. The game was tied at 7-7 entering halftime.
