Steve Sarkisian, one of the most talked-about coaches in the country right now, offered his take on Texas backup QB Arch Manning's development. He oversaw the Longhorns' electrifying 12-2 run last year and has developed one of the deepest quarterback rooms for the 2024 college football season.
With talent powerhouses like Quinn Ewers, Arch Manning and Trey Owens, Texas will be heading into its first season in the Southern Eastern Conference. Manning has been a part of the conversation since Ewers decided to come back for another year, as many expected Manning to take center stage in the upcoming season.
However, Ewers didn't declare for the 2024 NFL draft, and as a result, Manning will be spending another year on the bench. During the 2024 SEC Media Days, Texas coach Sarkisian addressed the chatter around Manning's playing opportunities:
"We've been fortunate to coach some pretty good quarterbacks. We've been fortunate to do it for some decades now. We've been fortunate to have some really good quarterback rooms. And I think the Manning family is pretty well aware of that.
"I think they trained Arch to try to put himself in the best position to try to play in the best conference in America and then, ultimately, put himself in the best position to further his career playing in the National Football League."
He concluded:
"I think Arch's development has been important to the family, and he's reaping the benefit of those things. It hasn't been very difficult at all. I think it's been pretty simple for him."
Arch Manning explains decision to stick with Texas
Quinn Ewers is projected to be among the top 10 overall picks in the 2025 NFL draft. But it's not enough for fans to stop raving about Arch Manning's status with the Longhorns, especially after his impressive performance during the 2024 spring game.
Manning threw 19-for-26 for 355 yards and scored three touchdowns along with one interception. Many have been urging and advising Manning to jump the gun and enter the transfer port.
However, he has stood tall on his decision and made his intentions to stick with Steve Sarkisian's crew time and time again. During an interview at the Manning Passing Academy, Manning explained about not entering the transfer portal:
"I like the situation I'm in. I like Austin. I like the school. I like the coaching staff. I like the people in the building.
"And it takes a while as a quarterback you try to make an impact where you are. It takes a while to learn everyone's name and learn and all the staff." (0:20)
Fans will be interested to see if Arch Manning gets a chance to perform in the 2024 college football season.
