On Saturday, Steve Sarkisian led his Texas Longhorns to the second round of the College Football Playoff. The No. 5-seeded team defeated the No. 12-seeded Clemson Tigers 38-24 to set up a matchup with the Arizona State Sun Devils in Round 2.
But victory was not the only thing that Sarkisian got after the Clemson game. As with many coaches, he gets performance bonuses for when the Longhorns reach important games.
According to On3.com, the Longhorns coach has earned at least $250,000 in bonuses for making the next stage of the CFP.
But if the Longhorns can go further in the tournament, Sarkisian is set to earn more for his performance bonus.
If the Longhorns are successful against the Sun Devils, Sarkisian will be in line to make up to $750,000. This figure increases to $1 million if Texas earns a spot in the national championship game, where victory in this game will not only give Sarkisian a national championship but $1.25 million in bonuses.
This is alongside the $150,000 that Sarkisian has earned for making the SEC championship game. This figure would have been doubled if the Longhorns had defeated the Georgia Bulldogs. (Georgia won 22-19 in overtime.)
Steve Sarkisian issues a warning to the other teams
After beating Clemson on Saturday, Steve Sarkisian issued a warning and a reminder to the rest of the playoff teams.
"We don’t forget," Sarkisian said. "I think that’s the first thing. I think we’ve got a group of guys that were here with us a year ago that didn’t forget that feeling in New Orleans last year. We’re far from that. We’ve got a couple more games to go to get there. But it sure serves as great motivation, when you can get close as we were.”
The Longhorns are the only remaining team in this year's bracket that made the CFP last year. They played in the Sugar Bowl against the Washington Huskies, a game that they lost 37-31 on the final play.
The team on that day is similar to the team that played in New Orleans. The Longhorns know what it's like to play in a high-stakes game, and they know the feeling that it causes when they lose.
