Ahead of the Red River Rivalry this weekend, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian gave an update on the injury of starting quarterback Quinn Ewers in his media availability on Monday.
The quarterback is in line to start in the Week 7 game against Oklahoma on Saturday.
“Quinn worked last week for our three practices,” Sarkisian said. “He practiced again today. I thought he looked good coming off the bye. I think if anybody benefited from the time off, it was probably him.”
“We’re going to monitor him daily, just to kind of see how he continues to progress, but I feel good about how he was today. I feel good about him going Saturday, but that remains to be seen."
Ewers sustained an abdominal injury in the game against UTSA on Sept. 14, which occurred as he threw across his body. This forced Ewers to leave the game in the second quarter and he went on to miss the next two games, leading to Arch Manning stepping in as his replacement.
Steve Sarkisian remains confident in Arch Manning
While Quinn Ewers might make a return to action against Oklahoma, Steve Sarkisian remains confident in the ability of Arch Manning.
If the backup option is required to step in during the Sooners game, the coach remains highly confident in his ability to keep the offense on track.
“I have no hesitation with Arch going in the game," Sarkisian said. "I think he's proven that to us over two-and-a-half games of football, that he's really played in and competed in, that he can run our offense and he can be successful.”
Manning has shown maturity in the last couple of games and Sarkisian believes that his preparation, both mentally and physically, makes him ready for any situation. The coach admires Manning’s poise under pressure and his brilliant understanding of the system.
Steve Sarkisian expresses his love for the Red River Rivalry
Ahead of another edition of the Red River Rivalry, Steve Sarkisian expressed his admiration for the rivalry game. It’s one of the oldest and keenly contested rivalries in the world of college football.
“I love everything about the Red River Rivalry,” Sarkian said. “I love pulling into the State Fair and seeing fans from both teams and 'horns up,' 'horns down,' all the stuff is flying around the buses. I love walking the field. I love the tunnel. I love both teams being in the tunnel together.”
Sarkisian has only won one of his three appearances in the rivalry contest and will hope to take down Oklahoma this weekend. No. 1 Texas enters the game as the heavy favorite but a lot can happen in a college football rivalry game.
