It was a special weekend for former Alabama Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban who had the honor of attending the program's unveiling of Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium, the new field named after him inside the Tide's stadium. He attended the ceremony with his wife, Miss Terry, and daughter Kristen Saban.
Saban was being celebrated from all corners, and Texas Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian's wife, Loreal Sarkisian, also penned a thoughtful message to the retired coach and his family.
"Love y'all," Loreal wrote.
How Nick Saban saved Steve Sarkisian's life
In 2020, when Steve Sarkisian was the Crimson Tide's offensive coordinator under Nick Saban and before the season started, the mandatory physical exam that Alabama staff were subjected to on the coach's orders saved Sarkisian's life.
It was discovered that the Texas coach had an aneurysm in his heart due to a leaky valve, adding to the fact that he only had two valves instead of three. He immediately had open heart surgery which saved his life by his own admission on ESPN's "SC Featured."
"Anytime I talk about my journey, my career, where we're at today — I would not be here without Nick Saban," Sarkisian said. "To have this executive physical, he saved me."
Saban revived Steve Sarkisian's coaching career as well when he hired him as an offensive analyst in 2016 after he was fired from the USC Trojans head coaching job in 2015 due to drinking problems.
Sarkisian was named Alabama's offensive coordinator in 2017 and coached the 2020 national championship-winning team. During an appearance on the "Paul Finebaum Show," the Texas coach stressed just how much the retired Saban and his wife did for him.
"I think the general fan sees Nick Saban as the straw hat flying at practice, the headset or the hands going on the sideline, or the press conference where he wants to just jump the one reporter for the question — when in reality, he and Miss Terry are probably two of the most compassionate, forgiving people I've ever been associated with," Sarkisian said.
"I learned a lot of that from him. I had to learn a lot about myself from him in that way."
Last season, when the Texas Longhorns beat the Alabama Crimson Tide 34-24 in Tuscaloosa, it was one of the few times that Nick Saban had ever lost to a former assistant coach of his, and fittingly, Steve Sarkisian would be the last coach from the Saban car wash to achieve that honor.
