Without a doubt, the Peach Bowl encounter between Texas and Arizona State on New Year's Day was the most exciting matchup of the College Football Playoff so far.
The combination of the Sun Devils offense finally getting into rhythm in the fourth quarter, a pair of failed field goal attempts by Bert Auburn for the Longhorns, and the excitement of two overtimes in which it seemed that things could go either way made for great drama.
Someone who's getting all the praise for his performance is Quinn Ewers, especially for pulling a rabbit out of the proverbial hat in the first overtime. On fourth down, following a penalty that put Texas in 4th and 13, Ewers threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Matthew Golden which saved the Longhorns' season.
Had he not connected, the game would've ended right then and there in favor of Arizona State.
FOX Sports analyst Chase Daniel was one of those to praise the quarterback's clutch performance:
"Quinn Ewers was THE difference maker in the game for Texas! Biggest play of the game was when he checked to C-0 Beater on the 4th & 13 TD pass.
"Checked to a post route and MAX protection…then slide the offensive line in the right way. Threw a dart with the season on the line."
Texas' Steve Sarkisian on Quinn Ewers' performance
Following the Peach Bowl win, Steve Sarkisian also praised Quinn Ewers' performance and in particular his composure in moments of stress:
"Quinn's a G, man. He is," head coach Steve Sarkisian said postgame. "Like I know he doesn't always exude that, like in his body language and his demeanor because I say it about him about this all the time, like he's a steady G. He never gets really high. There's flashes of that emotion. He never gets too low."
Ewers ended the night for Texas with 322 passing yards, three touchdown passes, and one interception. His QBR was 92, and he averaged 10.7 yards per pass. He also had one rushing touchdown.
