Leonard Fournette had one of the most iconic playing careers at LSU. The running back is now eyeing a return to Baton Rouge in an assistant role under the leadership of Tigers coach Brian Kelly.
LSU currently has Frank Wilson, who returned in 2022 after his stint at McNeese State, as its running back coach. However, Fournette said on Wednesday that he is looking to take over from him when he leaves the program.
“When coach Frank Wilson decides to step away from LSU, I’ll be the first to try to be the running backs coach of the program……” -Fournette on X.
The Super Bowl winner is a free agent after playing in the 2022 NFL season with the Buffalo Bills. With his return to the league uncertain, he is already considering his other options.
Leonard Fournette’s prospect of replacing Frank Wilson
Fournette’s on-field prowess is undeniable, especially during his time in Baton Rouge. He quickly ascended to become one of the most dominant RBs in LSU history.
He was able to forge a strong bond with Wilson, which aided his growth as a player. However, stepping into his shoes as a running back coach is a different ball game entirely, given his extensive experience.
The journey Wilson has taken over the past few decades to become a cornerstone of LSU football is remarkable. He has built a reputation as one of the premier recruiters in the nation, which has brought some of the best talents to Baton Rouge, including Fournette.
It would be a big challenge for Fournette if he gets the chance to become part of the coaching staff. His success will depend on how he can adapt to radical changes in the college football landscape.
